Match Summary :
Nearly a month after seeing off Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, Leganes face Los Blancos again in their rearranged La Liga (LL) clash. Will Leganes be victorious once again or will Madrid get their revenge?
The hosts head into the game having lost their last two league outings. Asier Garitano’s side have picked up just five points from their previous five league games (W1, D2, L2) – a run that has seen them slip to 13th in the table, level on 29 points with 12th-placed Real Sociedad.
Madrid travel to the Butarque stadium on the back of defeating PSG in the Champions League last-16 first leg last Wednesday, which was followed by a comeback from 2-1 down to win 5-3 at Betis on Sunday. Madrid’s form has improved significantly in recent weeks, with 13 points from their last five LL games (W4, D1, 23 goals scored). A draw at the Butarque will be enough for Zinedine Zidane’s men to leapfrog Valencia into third place.
None of the six previous meetings between these two sides in all competitions has ended in a stalemate, with Madrid coming out on top five times.
Players to watch: Madrid’s rising star Marco Asensio has been directly involved in three goals in his last two appearances (two goals, one assist). He has registered six goals and four assists in LL so far this season.
Central defender Dimitrios Siovas is set to return to the Leganes squad after serving a one-match ban following his late red card in his side’s 1-0 defeat to home to Eibar.
Stat attack: No other side have scored fewer first-half goals than Leganes (four) in LL this campaign.
Madrid have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight league games (15 goals conceded).
